DIY Funko Pop! Display Shelf

Over the past few years, my wife and I have collected quite a few Funko Pop! vinyl figures while at stores.  I decided to build a shelf to display them on the wall.

Since the Funko Pop! boxes are just about 3.5" deep, I decided on a 1x4" board for the shelf.  For those that don't know, a 4" board is actually only 3.5" wide.  They don't seem to sell shelf brackets that small, so instead of using a bracket, I attached a 1/2" x 3" board on the back.

Here are the materials I used, you can use whatever wood you want.  The finished Aspen boards required less sanding and seemed sturdier to me than pine.

Materials needed:

1" x 4" x 4' Aspen Board
1/2"x 3" x 4' Aspen Board
Spray Paint or Stain
Wood Glue
1" brads
2" construction screws to hang

I didn't bother to take picture while I was making this, so I'll be showing the cut off piece in the example.

1).  Put wood glue on the back of the shelf and line up with the 1x3.

2).  Using a C clamp or quick clamps, hold the two pieces together.  I used a scrap piece of wood to prevent damaging my shelf.

3).  Use an air bradder to put 1" brads in the back of the shelf for additional support.  If you don't an air nailer, you can just pound in a few small nails.  This will help support the shelf and hold the glue in place to dry.

4).  Let the glue dry at least a half hour before removing the clamps or per the glue instructions.

5).  Cut the shelf to the width you would like.  I cut mine to 38", that was a good length to have 8 Funko Pop!'s with a little padding on each side.  If you haven't already sanded the boards, do that now along with the ends.

6).  After the glue has had 12+ hours to dry, paint or stain the shelf to your liking.

7).  Find studs in your walls where you would like to hang the shelf.

8).  To hang the shelf, I drilled small pilot holes in the back of the shelf where it will line up with the stud.

9).  Attach the shelf to the wall with a 2" construction screw or something similar.  I suggest doing it on one side then leveling it and doing the other.  As you can see below, I only used 2 screws.  Since the Funko's aren't that heavy and the shelf isn't heavy, this should be plenty to hold it attached to 2 studs.

10).  Put up your Funko's.  I did 3 high on one shelf, but you could do a single layer and build more shelves.  Since the 1/2" board on the back makes a gap, you can sort of lean them backwards to avoid them falling off forward.

I hope you enjoy your shelves.
